MISSON and VISION
Students who successfully complete the undergraduate program in the Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences, they call "astronomer". The chapter's annual quota is 30 - 40 students.
Department of Astronomy and Space Science is composed of two departments: The Department of General Astronomy and Astrophysics. However, the curriculum for each department is same. Including preparatory year, teaching time of our department is 5 years. Those who succeed in qualification test, they complete preparatory year. %30 of our department lesson are English. Mathematic, physics and astronomy are almost evenly distributed in education program. After preparatory year, our students learn basic science based on physics and mathematic in first four semesters. In the last four semesters, students read as compulsory and elective vocational lessons. When they gradued from our department, they can get a job at a Departmant of Astronomy and Space Science, planetaryum, space camps and observatory.
Graduates can also work in the fields of computer hardware and software or they can become trainers / consultants in private schools and high schools.
In addition to the undergraduate education program, there are also Master and PhD programs. Graduates who wish to develop themselves in the field of astronomy and to conduct original research can continue to graduate programs of the department. Those who complete the master's program receive, they have called ” Master of Science". If they complete the PhD programs, they have called “ Doctor of Philosophy”.
Our department has an observatory with observations and researches. At the Ege University Observatory, four telescopes with 48-cm, 40-cm, 35-cm and 30-cm diameter are used for scientific studies and many small telescopes are used in the practice of students and popular astronomy studies.
THE GOAL OF DEPARTMENT
The aim of the department is to educate the students in the field of Astronomy based on the basic physics and mathematics background, to inform them about the researches in the field of Astronomy and to educate them as useful individuals.
The courses that students have to take for four years are divided into three. In the beginning phase, the undergraduate education, which is based on Physics and Mathematics, is carried out mainly in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The students who study the department receive computer-assisted foreign language education in their first year. In the first four semesters, students who have completed this training take the basic science courses based on physics and mathematics and selectively take courses on culture. In the last four semesters, vocational courses are compulsory and elective.
There are 22 academic staff in our department. The staff of the department are working in the fields of Eclipsing Binary Stars, Star Activity, Pulsating Stars, Asteroseismology, Star Evolution Models, General Relativity Theory and Cosmology. One of the main objectives of the department is to conduct original research and publish these researches in international journals. The academic staffs are expected to complete at least one original research per year at international level and to translate it into a publication.
It is difficult to relate directly to the economy of the our country as the real research area of the department enters basic sciences. However, it is clear that research-oriented manpower, which is equipped with contemporary information at undergraduate and graduate levels, has a significant contribution to the national economy.
4. Environmental Relations
The research center, where the department conducts its original research, organizes summer schools for the public. In these schools, contemporary information is conveyed to the people of all ages through visual material, and it is ensured that the lecturers reach the right information and thought through the lessons they give.
16 popular publications were published in order to raise the level of knowledge and knowledge of our academic staffs. In our center and department, seminars are organized for public and high school students.
Our academic staff from time to time on popular and current issues in accordance with the request from the public TV and radio channels are participating in astronomy talks.
